Residency Training in South Carolina
South Carolina is home to sixteen (16) family medicine residency training programs, each located in a different part of the state. Each offers it own unique experience, including practice environment, lifestyle and community.

The mission of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Aiken Regional is to train competent, compassionate and conscientious physicians in the full scope of family medicine practice. The program includes training that will have a strong emphasis on professionalism, teamwork and evidence-based practice; residents will receive their training in a nurturing environment that focuses on well-being and all-around development as a family medicine physician. Upon conclusion of training, residents will have the knowledge and experience needed to bridge the gaps in care wherever they choose to practice, whether that’s within Aiken County and the surrounding areas or other parts of the state or country. Should graduates choose to practice in other areas of the state or country, their practice will be a reflection of the quality of education within our program and values encouraged in our setting.

A Message from Our Program Director
Rural Family Medicine has historically been vital to the medical care of the residents of South Carolina and many other states. McLeod Health now offers a unique training opportunity: McLeod Family Medicine Rural Residency. This newly- accredited program offers the opportunity to train in one of two rural sites: Cheraw, SC and Manning, SC.
These sites are in small rural communities co-located with McLeod’s rural hospitals: McLeod Health Cheraw and McLeod Health Clarendon. Some of the rotations, especially in the first year, will occur in Florence at McLeod Regional Medical Center, which provides a basis of medical knowledge to support the residents’ training in the rural areas. Most rotations in the last two years of training will be spent in the residents’ designated home sites either in the hospital or alongside the specialists. Residents will care for their own patient panel in the rural area during all three years. They can also participate in outreach programs within their communities. This will provide residents with a unique and exciting experience that prepares them to practice family medicine in a rural setting.

Grand Strand Family Medicine Residency Program
We are delighted that you are interested in Grand Strand Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency, and we hope that you will take a serious look at our program, which is expected to take its first class of residents in July 2017. Even though we are a new program, we think that we have much to offer.
Our program is located in one of the South's great family destinations. The sandy beaches, mild climate and endless area attractions, as well as state-of-the-art medical facilities and welcoming medical community, make Myrtle Beach an attractive place to learn as well as play. We are affiliated with Grand Strand Medical Center, a 301-bed (and growing) acute care hospital that is renowned for its cardiac and stroke services as well as its Trauma Center, which is the busiest in the state. The hospital is committed to providing excellent training opportunities, and the residents will work closely alongside collegial attending physicians.
Although we are a new program, we are committed to make this one of the best Family Medicine training programs in the country. We strive to meet the clinical interests and needs of our residents while meeting or exceeding the ACGME requirements for Family Medicine training. As a graduate of our program, you will be capable of independently caring for all age groups, managing complex medical conditions and performing common office procedures. If you wish to include obstetrics in your future clinical practice, you will be prepared for that as well. You will have the opportunity to perfect your invasive procedural skills and clinical scenarios in a state-of-the-art simulation center. You will enhance your patient communication skills and will be exposed to innovative ways to help maintain your empathy towards patients. During your training, you will also receive supervised experience in basic clinical research skills as well as learn how to practice evidence-based medicine.
We recognize that Family Medicine is not just a career, it is an attitude. For this reason, we believe that a residency program must not only provide a solid educational experience, but it must also remain supportive of family and personal life as well. In Myrtle Beach, we are confident you will be able to achieve this balance.
I invite you to explore our website, which is being amended as our program grows and develops. If you are looking for a residency program that provides excellent training in a scenic and friendly environment, don't take my word for it — come spend some time with us and see the opportunities that await you.
