The South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians (SCAFP) has honored Neal L. Shealy, MD of Varnville, SC as the 2019-2020 SCAFP Family Physician of the Year. The Family Physician of the Year award honors an outstanding South Carolina family physician who provides patients with compassionate and comprehensive care, and serves as a role model professionally and personally to his or her community, other health professionals, residents and medical students.
Initially in a rural private practice in Crossnore, NC for almost a decade, Dr. Shealy returned home to South Carolina in 1991. He joined the Harrison Peeples Health Care Center in rural Varnville, SC. Dr. Shealy is currently the Medical Director of the Center and has shared his rural experience and expertise with medical and nursing students and physician assistant students.
In presenting the award to Dr. Shealy, Dr. Richard Boyles, Jr., Board Chair, noted, “ I know from his patients, his friends, as well as other physicians in our communities, that he embodies all that this high award honors. Dr. Shealy is the consummate Family Doctor. He is not only loved by his patients for the care he gives and how he gives it, but most importantly, for why he practices the way he does. His dedication to the highest level of practice for all he sees is shown in the care he provides his patients.” Boyles also noted, “Neal Shealy is woven into the fabric of his community through his service, dedication, and reverence to the people there. He is known by his colleagues as a skilled clinician dedicated to his own lifelong education.”
